Spinal manipulation is a chiropractic spinal adjustment where a thrust is applied to certain vertebrae for correcting a malposition (an afflicted joint). This method of healing dates back to the days of Hippocrates and the ancient Egyptians as well. Physical therapists and osteopaths also use spinal manipulation to heal their patients.
The Chiropractic Initiative Act of California became effective on December 21, 1922. Since that time, more than 26,000 chiropractors have been licensed to practice in the state. There are currently four chiropractic colleges in the state and there are two active state chiropractic associations.
Chiropractic is the largest licensed non-medical (drug-free) health care profession in the state, with nearly 8000 Chiropractors serving some 480,000 residents each day.
